The widespread deployment of Level 5 autonomous vehicles (AVs) is far from a sure thing. Despite the exuberant predictions of the past decade, many automakers and industry players are scaling back their enthusiasm and approaching AV development with scepticism, especially where personal vehicles are concerned. However, that is not to say that full autonomy is off the cards altogether. The technology to move the vehicles exists, but creating a holistic ecosystem that supports hundreds of thousands of self-driving cars is a tough nut to crack.
