Industry clean-up extends to manufacturing operations

Factories need to reduce pollution or risk undoing much of the progress achieved at tailpipe level, writes Megan Lampinen

The automotive industry is slowly but steadily addressing its carbon footprint. The majority of the sector's lifecycle emissions come from the fuel combustion in downstream vehicle usage, and dramatic improvements have been made on this front over the years. The diesel emissions scandal prompted greater regulatory scrutiny, and new testing procedures should go far in ensuring rapid improvements in the years ahead. But operational emissions cannot be overlooked. These contribute roughly 10% of the automotive industry's lifecycle emissions.
