How it happened: the Phoenix Uber Crash

March 2018 saw the first recorded instance of a pedestrian killed by an autonomous vehicle. Investigations continue, but the picture to emerge so far suggests shortcomings by Uber

The city of Tempe is located in the East Valley section of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The vehicle belonged to Uber, and was fitted with an Uber Advanced Technologies Group’s self-driving vehicle system. The ride-hailing company had been trialling the vehicles on the road in the area since August 2016, taking advantage of the state’s permissive regulatory framework.
