Fraunhofer Institute, SBHPP make inroads into plastic engine parts

Fraunhofer Institute's NAS and Sumitomo Bakelite's SBHPP are researching the use of fibre reinforced plastic to build an automotive engine's cylinder casing, to reduce weight

The Fraunhofer project group for new drive systems (NAS), part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology, in collaboration with SBHPP, the high-performance plastics business unit of Japan-based Sumitomo Bakelite, has launched an experimental engine which features cylinder blocks in which certain parts are made of fibre-reinforced plastics.
