Consumers have long been complaining that the mileage they experience with their cars does not match what was promised on the fuel economy label at the time of purchase. Criticism has been levelled at the testing procedure, which allows vehicle manufacturers to take advantage of loopholes to optimise their results. A recent admission by Ford that it overstated fuel economy claims on six different models shines a spotlight once again on the controversy.
