Uneven and fragile – caution surrounds EU’s return to growth

Sales across the EU have rebounded from a two-decade low and six consecutive years of decline, but nobody is celebrating just yet

New car sales in the UK and Spain continued to power ahead last month, propelling total EU-wide passenger car sales to 951,329 units (+4.7%) in December. As a result, Europe wrapped up 2014 with total registrations of 12,550,771 new cars, a 5.7% year-on-year rise and the first full-year of growth since 2007. That's a notable improvement following the two-decade low reported the previous year.
