EU regulations point to the future of EV recycling

Proposals for updated directives will likely provide ambitious, and necessary, targets for lithium recovery. By Jacob Moreton

Electric vehicles are regarded by most as the future of a sustainable automotive industry but recycling remains a vexing problem. Regulation will play a key role in building up capacity for coming EV demand but what is the current state of EV recycling regulation, and does it go far enough?

Given that an EV battery is typically considered at the ‘end’ of its life by the time it has depleted to around 60-70% of its full capacity, recycling plays a major role in ensuring materials are used sustainably. In fact, there are several ways to reuse battery materials, says Jessika Richter, Postdoctoral Fellow at Lund University in Sweden.
