Driver distraction – the harsh realities

A momentary lapse in concentration when driving might not seem like a big deal, but the consequences can be catastrophic, writes Betti Hunter

Distraction is one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on the world’s roads. According to studies by the EU and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), around 5-25% of crashes can be attributed to distracted driving. The statistics are stark; World Health Organization research reveals that 1.25 million people lose their lives every year in road traffic incidents, 90% of which can be attributed to human error. NHTSA estimates that 3,166 Americans alone died as a direct result of distracted driving in 2017, but the exact number is likely to be much higher.
