Decision time: what does the truck industry want from platooning?

While the benefits of platooning are clear, recent cooling of interest within the industry is beginning to highlight the scale of the task at hand. By Jack Hunsley

On paper, platooning is a concept with many positives. The ability to connect a series of trucks using cellular and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) connectivity could help improve safety, efficiency in logistics and, perhaps most importantly, fuel economy. As such, it has come as little surprise to have seen the truck industry widely back the concept since the creation of the European Commission’s SARTRE (Safe Road Trains for the Environment) in 2009.
