Does the group acquisition of Nokia’s mapping unit indicate that OEMs are taking competition from tech companies seriously?

The group acquisition of HERE came as something of a surprise to the industry, as three rivals – Daimler AG, BMW and Volkswagen AG – joined forces to secure Nokia’s sought after mapping division. Some have suggested that this was an effort to cut off advances from tech giants Google and Apple to develop their own cars.

Does this signal that OEMs are taking competition from typically non-automotive players seriously, and if so, how much of a threat are they to established OEMs?
