Can automaker infotainment systems rival Google and Apple’s platforms?

Ford launched its SmartDeviceLink Consortium to give automakers control over app systems, but the industry is still clinging to the tech giants. By Betti Hunter

As connected car technology grows in popularity, automakers are looking for new ways to develop the in-car experience. A limited range of infotainment offerings will no longer satisfy discerning consumers, who are demanding innovations that will make the driving experience more entertaining, convenient, and safe. An April 2019 study by Reports and Data suggests that the worth of the global connected automotive infotainment systems market will skyrocket to US$53.28bn by 2026. Manufacturers and app developers alike cannot afford to ignore the trend.
