The BMW i3 is a unique car in many respects. It is the first mainstream car to feature significant amounts of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The complete passenger compartment of the car has been built using this material. This strategic shift to CFRP is considered one of the biggest such transitions since OEMs turned to aluminium to cut down on vehicle weight.
