With the addition of another contract, Delphi Automotive says that four new European electric vehicles will feature its Vehicle Sound Generator by the end of the year, with another vehicle in Asia including it during 2013.
In total, five vehicles will be equipped with Delphi’s vehicle sound generators which enable OEMs to meet forthcoming global government safety legislation for EV/HEVs.
Delphi says its 10x10cm, under-340g single-box sound generator is about three times lighter than a multi-box system and uses 90% less power. The system provides a frequency range of 300Hz-10KHz and can reproduce sounds or melodies that represent the identity of individual vehicle manufacturers.
The sound generator allows OEMs to enable multiple warning features using one sounder. Audio alerts can be designed to remind EV or PHEV drivers that the vehicle battery should be charged, to confirm that a charging sequence is in progress or to notify the driver when a charging sequence is complete. The sounder could also be programmed to emit a warning sound when a pedestrian is detected by a collision warning system.
