In a recent report, (GAO-12-842), compiled and published at the request of members of the US Congress and covered by Greencarcongress.com, the US Government Accountability Office identifies 39 battery and energy storage initiatives with a variety of key characteristics that have been implemented across six federal agencies from 2009 to date: These include the Departments of Energy (DOE) and Defense (DOD); the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); the National Science Foundation (NSF); the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

These initiatives, which obligated funding of more than US$1.3bn from fiscal years 2009 through to 2012, supported a variety of technologies, uses, advancement activities, and goals, according to the GAO report. In addition to these obligations, the DOE supported about US$596m in direct loans. Recipients eligible for the reported federal funding included companies, universities, and National Laboratories, through contracts, grants, and other mechanisms. The GAO described these battery funding initiatives as fragmented, but not duplicative of one another.
