Registrations of new passenger cars and commercial vehicles in New Zealand rose 13.9% year-on-year in September to 8,690 units. This compared with a total of 7,628 vehicles registered in the country in the same month a year earlier.

Figures published by the Motor Industry Association (MIA) of New Zealand show that the passenger car segment accounted for 6,637 units last month, 16.8% more than the 5,684 cars registered in September 2011.

Toyota continued to dominate the country’s passenger car market last month, posting sales of 1,211 cars. It was followed by General Motors’ brand Holden, with sales of 762 units, while Ford managed 610 units.

The CV segment last month posted registrations of 2,053 units, including light trucks. This figure translated into a year-on-year increase of 5.6% compared with the 1,944 vehicles registered in New Zealand in the corresponding month in 2011.

Segment leader Toyota accounted for sales of 533 units. Ford came second, selling 315 vehicles, while Mitsubishi, with sales of 222 units, overtook Holden (211) for third place.
