Chrysler is recalling certain 2009-2010MY Ram 1500 and Dodge Dakota trucks in the US due to a loosened rear axle pinion. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall covers a total of 44,300 pick-ups built between 1 July 2009 and 30 November 2009.
If the rear axle pinion nut loosens, the axle can lock up and cause a loss of vehicle control or even a vehicle crash with little warning. The safety agency launched a preliminary investigation into the models in July.
Chrysler will begin notifying owners in November. As a fix, dealers will install a pinion nut retainer.
