2024 Olympics could herald major changes to Parisian mobility habits

A vision of sustainable transport has been designed for Paris 2024, but will it last when the athletes leave town? By Betti Hunter

Paris is a city attempting to take great leaps towards green, sustainable mobility. In 2017, the City Hall announced plans to completely eliminate diesel and gasoline vehicles within the city by 2030, in line with targets to ban the sale of new diesel cars across France by 2040. Mayor Anne Hidalgo has pledged to clean up the Parisian air by reducing the number of personal vehicles on the highly congested roads. Major roads have been closed to vehicles, and a monthly car-free Sunday has been implemented in the city centre as part of the Paris Respire initiative. Following the closure of the car-sharing service Autolib, new shared e-mobility options have been introduced, spearheaded by PSA Group’s Free2Move free-floating model.
