The success of tech start-ups and other non-traditional players in today’s automotive industry is testament to the fact that building the autonomous car is proving to be very hard work, and has called for whole new sets of expertise. This should come as a surprise to no-one, but it’s a reality occasionally obscured by the utopian gloss that now invariably characterises major automotive events such as IAA 2017 and CES 2018.
