After threatened lawsuits and obstacles with the name of the Model E, Tesla has announced that its third-generation car will be called the Model 3, and will be available in 2017. Tesla has said the car will cost around US$35,000, which is half the price of the Model S. An obvious comparison, in both name and price, is to BMW’s 3-Series, which is likely to be the car’s main competition.
A few weeks ago Tesla said it was aiming for a late 2016 launch of its more affordable model, which at that point did not have a name. Tesla had trademarked the Model E name, but Ford had planned to sue Tesla for this. Musk joked that Ford was “killing sex” – a remark related to the three Tesla model names – the S, the proposed E and the X.
