Tesla tripped up by ambitious targets: production delays become production hell

Tesla's production target of 500,000 units a year by 2018 looks increasingly unlikely. By Megan Lampinen

Tesla is nothing if not ambitious. It not only wants to make money for itself and its shareholders, but it also wants to make the world a cleaner place. However, it tends to bypass the baby steps and go straight in for the wow factor - sales, production and launch targets are all set high. Most are missed - repeatedly. Chief Executive Elon Musk has been apologising for delays since the launch of the Tesla Roadster. He hasn't stopped yet. The company was forced to push back the launch of the Model S and Model X, and is continuing the tradition now with the Model 3.
