Small start, massive potential: VW and Navistar promise ‘all options open’

The new alliance will start with a focus on powertrain development and procurement synergies, but the scope for expansion is almost limitless. By Megan Lampinen

After a short period of suspense Navistar and Volkswagen Truck & Bus have confirmed plans for a wide-ranging tie-up. The relationship is starting with powertrain development and joint sourcing, but it has the potential to go much, much larger. Speaking to analysts in a press conference, Andreas Renschler, Chief Executive of Volkswagen Truck & Bus, made it clear that this was just the beginning. "This is the starting point. All options are open," he told analysts in response to questions about additional investment and even a future merger.
