Safety, not TCO reduction, will kick start autonomous truck adoption

Autonomy may not develop the bottom line as quickly as we expect, says Wilfried Aulbur, a Senior Partner at Roland Berger, but further safety regulation will push forward developments. By Xavier Boucherat

Efforts to bring cleaner, safer trucks to the road have been a demonstrable success. Figures from Roland Berger show that in the USA, between 2003 and 2013, there was a 21% fall in truck-related fatalities worldwide, and overall max limits on nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) fell by 95%. The introduction of next-generation powertrains, reduced rolling resistance tyres and advanced aerodynamics have also contributed to efficiency gains.
