Platooning ‘leverages the best of human driving alongside the best in tech’

Peloton is approaching the finish line to put platoons to work on US highways, but where autonomy is concerned, the driver remains invaluable, says CEO Josh Switkes. By Xavier Boucherat

It has been an exciting year for Peloton, says Chief Executive Josh Switkes. Testing of its platooning technology has continued across several states, in co-operation with some of North America’s largest heavy-duty truck fleets. In December 2017, for example, the company participated in the State of Florida’s Driver-Assistive Truck Platooning Project. The Sunshine State has established itself a leader for autonomous testing, with regulations embracing the technology, and as part of the project, two Volvo Class 8 trucks fitted with Peloton’s platooning solution covered over 1,000 miles. These were separated by a distance of 65 feet (20 metres) – enough to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve fuel efficiency.
