London-led truck safety initiative to protect VRUs

London's Direct Vision Standard and a proposed safety permit from 2020 is forcing OEMs to rethink truck cab design to improve driver's ability to see pedestrians and cyclists. Could the proposed permit spread to other cities? By Celeste Dooley

The automotive industry’s efforts to reduce road traffic fatalities have seen the introduction of a raft of technologies, from passive to active safety, and from advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to trials around semi- and fully-autonomous drive technology. Now a new initiative in London could see local government influence vehicle design as it seeks to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities.
