COMMENT: When it comes to AVs, the imperfect cannot get in the way of the good

In the field of human endeavour, people get hurt and people get killed. ’Twas ever thus, and countless lives have been lost in man’s pursuit of technological advancement.

Usually, however, those injured or killed are the drivers, pilots, riders or adventurers willingly taking risks and pushing known boundaries.

Rarely is the victim a mere bystander or, as in the case of the tragedy in Tempe, Arizona, a pedestrian struck whilst crossing a road by a supervised Uber car in autonomous mode.
