Brexit adds uncertainty for an auto industry in flux

The UK auto industry needs a level of certainty and predictability which is sorely lacking on Brexit, writes Patricia Godfrey of law firm CMS

The UK’s new car market fell 15.7% year-on-year in March, with the first quarter down 12.4% y-o-y. This fall in demand, coupled with a lack of clarity around Brexit are two key factors behind ongoing concern about the UK automotive sector. In addition, confusion over diesel taxation and wider air quality plans are impacting domestic demand, while unprecedented technological advances mean electric vehicles and even some form of driverless vehicles are now firmly on the domestic horizon.

The confusion surrounding Brexit could have a profound impact on a sector where much of the legal and regulatory framework derives from EU Regulations and Directives.
