Presentation Slides: Driving technology forward - navigation, added value for driver assistance systems
Date published: Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Slides from a presentation made by Dr Rainer Holve, Vice President and General Manager of Automotive Software, Elektrobit, at Automotive Megatrends USA 2012.
Topics covered include:
- Besides the navigation system, other systems in the vehicle also benefit from information about routing. The electronic horizon is the basis for other comfort and safety functions in the automobile.
- Navigation systems are essential nowadays in modern street traffic. They bring the driver to his or her destination as smoothly as possible, even in the remotest corners of the world. But this is just the be-ginning. The information about the driving environment and the suggested route provided by map material today could also provide truly "valuable" hints for driving behaviour.
- Additional safety functions to avoid accidents could also motivate a number of applications. After all, nearly one-fourth of all traffic accidents involving personal injury are due to inappropriate speed, improper street use, or passing manoeuvres. Many crashes could be avoided if the driver were warned of tight curves in advance, for example, or had information about lane changes, or if the vehicle itself were to automatically reduce speed.
