Nissan North America is to recall 653,910 Altima and Sentra sedans due to a defective crankshaft position sensor. This is expected to commence om 10 December 2007, the company states.
The recall covers 2002 and 2005-2006 model year Altima and Sentra sedans that feature the 2.5-litre gasoline engine. According to the OEM, the crankshaft position sensor on these vehicles may overheat, resulting in a brief interruption in the signal output. Consequently, this shuts off the engine at low speeds.
The likelihood of the engine shutting down is high when the disruption in signals from the sensor is brief enough to prevent the electronic control module (ECM) from diagnosing the condition, the company notes.
This recall is an expansion of one which began in August 2006, the OEM says. As a fix, Nissan dealers will reprogramme the vehicles' ECMs.
