France: New vehicle market rises 2.6% in January; Toyota overtakes Opel-Saab and Fiat-Alfa-Lancia

The total new vehicle market (private cars and LCVS) in France climbed by 2.6% year-on-year to 211,223 units in January, according to a provisional data released by CCFA.
Foreign brand sales rose by 10.2% last month, to 96,729 units. French brands sold 114,494 units (down 3%) in January for a market share of 54.2%.
PSA Peugeot-Citroen maintained its position as market leader in January, with sales of 64,675 units and a market share of 30.6%, followed by Renault with a 23.6% market share and 49,778 sales. Sales for both OEMs however, declined year-on-year, by 0.4% and 6.3% respectively.
Volkswagen took third in the overall market and was the leading foreign brand, with a 10.8% market share and sales of 22,798 units (up 14.2%). This was followed by Ford (6.3% market share), DaimlerChrysler (4.8%) and Toyota (including Lexus), with 4.8% of the market.
New car registrations for January inched up by 1.8% year-on-year to 171,669 units, thanks to foreign brand sales. Sales volumes of local brands fell by 4.2%, while foreign brands rose by 9.1% year-on-year. French brands contributed 51.5% of the total for January.
Registrations of new light commercial vehicles (less than five tonnes) saw an increase of 6.2% during the month, to 39,554 units. January registrations of heavy trucks greater than five tonnes (except buses and coaches), rose by 17% year-on-year to 4,427 units.
