Japan: New engines for Suzuki Escudo; revised Grand Vitara to follow for export markets

Thirty-seven months after its launch, a facelifted version of the latest generation Suzuki Escudo has been launched in Japan, along with new gasoline engines. It is likely that North America's 2009 model year Grand Vitara will gain the styling update as will Maruti Suzuki India's model, later in 2008.

For the home market at least, there are changes to the engine line-up. The former 2.0-litre I4 and 2.7-litre V6 have been replaced by 2.4-litre I4 and 3.2-litre V6 engines. The European markets Renault-sourced 1.9-litre I4 turbodiesel has never been available in Japan, while it remains to be seen if Europe's current 1.6-litre I4, 2.0-litre I4 and 2.5-litre V6 gasoline powertrain line-up is retained when the revised Grand Vitara reaches that region.

The styling update for this ladder-frame but independently-sprung mid-sized SUV stretches to new bumpers, a revised grille, restyled 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels and LED indicators incorporated into the exterior mirrors (except base trim). Other changes for the home market include the addition of ESP, a hill holder system and a collision avoidance programme as part of the optional updated SatNav/telematics system.

The new Suzuki Escudo goes on sale in Japan immediately. Build for all markets remains at the OEM's Iwata plant in Shizuoka prefecture.
