Lincoln has revealed a production version of its former MKS concept at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show.

The 2009 MKS sedan will be a rival for the Cadillac CTS and DTS, Lexus GS, Infiniti G sedan, BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class when it goes on sale in the US, Canada and Mexico in summer 2008.

Initially, all versions will be powered by a 270hp 3.7-litre V6. All-wheel drive will be standard. More powerful variants will be added later in 2008. These will feature Ford Group's forthcoming direct injection turbocharged TwinForce V6.

While the MKS concept from the 2006 Detroit motor show was powered by a 4.4-litre V8, Lincoln has made no announcement about such an engine for the production model.

The new MKS is the first production Lincoln to use design cues from the MKR concept which premiered at the Detroit motor show in January. The most obvious of these is the double-wing grille which Lincoln says was inspired by the 1941 Continental Cabriolet.

Convenience features on the new model will include Ford and Microsoft's SYNC voice-activated, hands-free in-car communications system; Easy Fuel capless fuel filling; THX-certified audio; SIRIUS Travel Link; voice-activated navigation; and a keyless entry keypad.

The 2009 Lincoln MKS will be priced from US$38,000. Like the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans, as well as the Ford Taurus X crossover, the new model sits on the Volvo-derived D3 architecture and will be built at the OEM's Chicago plant.
