Honda has provided information and images of the second-generation Fit (Jazz in certain markets) five-door hatchback model, ahead of its launch at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Fit will go on sale in Japan on 26 October.
Design changes on the new Fit include front pillars that have been moved forward and the fuel lid that features Honda's first application of a push-lift opener. The OEM has carried forward the concept of the centre tank layout with the fuel tank mounted centrally under the front seats.
The new Fit is 55mm longer than its predecessor, 20mm wider and its wheelbase is 50mm longer. It is 3,900mm long, 1,695mm wide and has a wheelbase of 2,500mm. Its height however, remains the same at 1,525mm and it has maintained the previous generation's turning radius of 4.7m, by increasing the tread size.
Depending on the trim level, the Fit now features a tilt and telescoping steering column and a ratchet-operated seat height adjuster as standard fitment. According to Honda, the rear seats are now 20mm wider and 15mm deeper, compared with those on the previous-generation Fit. Another change is that the spare tyre has been replaced with an emergency tyre repair kit, freeing up 64 litres of space. The car now features storage space of 427 litres, says Honda.
The Fit features a choice of two new gasoline-powered i-VTEC engines, a 1.3-litre and a 1.5-litre unit. According to Honda, the 1.3-litre engine has a maximum power output of 98hp (73kW) and average fuel consumption of 24km/l. The 1.5-litre unit, meanwhile, is claimed to deliver 118hp (88kW), with fuel consumption of 19.6km/l. The engines are coupled to continuously variable transmissions (CVT).
The car has a newly-designed chassis and features a MacPherson strut front suspension, the OEM says. According to the trim level, the Fit features Honda's vehicle stability assist (VSA) system as well.
A rotating passenger seat is an available option on the new Fit. Designed with a specially contoured seat cushion and oversized bearings, the seat offers 295mm of foot space during rotation, which is 65mm more than the previous generation, according to Honda.
There is still no mention of a three-door hatchback variant or a diesel engine for the Fit. The new car is likely to have its US sales launch soon after it goes on sale in Japan. The OEM is yet to divulge the pricing details. The Fit will compete with the Toyota Vitz and Mazda Demio in the domestic market.
