Audi has unveiled its Cross Coupé quattro concept at the Shanghai Motor Show. The mid-sized SUV is believed to be a preview of the forthcoming Q5.

The show vehicle, painted silver, sports 20-inch wheels and features an electronically operated folding fabric roof.

The Cross Coupé quattro is 4,380mm long and 1,820mm wide, making it similarly sized to the Audi A3 Sportback, though the concept, at 1,680mm high, is 180mm taller than the five-door hatchback small car.

The concept's engine is a transversely mounted four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbodiesel with common-rail fuel injection and piezo injectors, mated to a dual-clutch gearbox. The engine has a maximum power output of 204hp (152kW) and 400Nm (289 lb ft) of torque.

Audi claims average fuel consumption of 16.9km/l for the Cross Coupé quattro, with emissions controlled by a particulate filter and the Bluetec system. The vehicle also features the OEM's drive select system, through which three individual configurations for the engine, gearbox, steering and adaptive shock absorbers can be pre-selected.

The concept also has an 'efficiency' setting, whereby the engine map and shift points are modified to an economical driving style. Additionally, components such as the air conditioning compressor are deactivated to further save fuel.

The Multi Media Interface (MMI) has been enhanced as well, with the system's monitor featuring dual-view technology. The monitor displays different images for the driver and the front passenger as these images are visible only when viewed from a specific angle.

The production version of the Cross Coupé quattro, the Q5, is scheduled to go on sale in 2008. Its main competitors will be the Acura RDX, Land Rover Freelander, BMW X3 and Lexus RX.

The Q5 will be built at the OEM's Ingolstadt facility and share a number of components with the Volkswagen Tiguan. Both vehicles have a 2,602mm wheelbase.
