Ratan Tata, the chairman and owner of the firm bearing his name, sees Fiat Group possibly distributing the low-cost Nano minicar in markets outside India.
"We have held talks about the Nano being marketed in markets where Fiat has already a strong presence. I am open to consider a partnership," he said at a forum promoting cooperation between Italian and Indian companies, Reuters reports.
Production of the Nano is expected to start within weeks, Tata revealed recently.
The car making divisions of the Indian and Italian conglomerates have a joint venture in Tata's home market for the manufacture and distribution of cars, engines and commercial vehicles.
Fiat Group's chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, speaking to reporters at the conference, added that the company was in talks with Tata about making buses and trucks.
"We'll see if there are the conditions for us to go forward," the newswire quotes him as stating.
In May, the management of Iveco issued a statement saying that progress on a Tata Motors joint venture was being necessarily delayed whilst the Indian firm finalised arrangements for its takeover of Jaguar Land Rover.
