Russia: Consultancy claims country became largest European market in H1

Russia has overtaken Germany to become the largest car market in the European region, a PricewaterhouseCoopers document states. The UK's Autocar magazine quotes the consultancy's findings as stating that new car sales in Russia rose by a 41% in the first half of this financial year to 1.65 million units. If that rate is maintained, some 3.8 million cars will be sold in the country this year, roughly 600,000 more than in Germany, PwC believes.
In January, the chief executive of Renault and Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, said he saw Russia becoming the largest European market within two years, while John Fleming, the head of Ford of Europe, an OEM that already has a manufacturing plant in the country, said he thought it would be in 2009.
