Great Wall Motor and Chrysler LLC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding "to explore long-term business ties in various areas including distribution, components and technology". A spokesman for the UK operations of the Michigan-based OEM has confirmed the story to AutomotiveWorld.com, which various newswires are carrying.
Since its separation from what is now Daimler AG, production of Chrysler LLC brand vehicles have nevertheless continued, with the 300C sedan, new Sebring and previous generation Chrysler Town & Country minivan all assembled at the former DaimlerChrysler and Beijing Jeep joint venture plant (now 'Beijing Benz') alongside the Mercedes-Benz C- and E-Class sedans.
How this latest announcement affects Chrysler's deal with Chery Automobile, under which the Chinese OEM is to supply small cars for the Dodge brand, is as yet unclear. In response to the media coverage of it and Great Wall's announcement, Chrysler says no other details of the deal are ready to be announced, pending the approval of "more specific plans", the company adding that it continues to talk to "a number of Chinese auto makers".
