Full production of a new dual fuel compressed natural gas (CNG)-gasoline 1.7-litre EF7 'national' engine is due to start in Iran on 23 September. The engine is based on the existing 1.4-litre (EF4) prototype.

The new engine has been jointly designed by Iran's Engine Research Centre and Germany's FEV Engine Technology for CNG fuel, according to Iran Daily.

The turbocharged unit delivers 112hp (84kW) of power with gasoline and 100hp (75kW) while running on CNG – more than the Iran Khodro Samand's current 1.8-litre engine. The engine is expected to reduce fuel consumption by 10% and emissions by 70%.

The report says that the 1,700cc engine will be fitted to 21,000 Samand Soren sedans by the end of the Iranian financial year (March 2008). EF7 engine production is projected to reach 120,000 units by 2008 and 220,000 by 2009, the report states.

The report also says that currently, the 1,400cc engine in the EF family is undergoing laboratory tests.

The first national engine was introduced on 22 November 2005 and was tested in a Samand car in Germany.
