Both Mitsubishi and Toyota are providing environmentally friendly vehicles for use by politicians and members of the media attending the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit (7-9 July).

Mitsubishi has provided ten i MiEV electric vehicles, which will also be used for test drives. The OEM plans to launch the i MiEV next year in Japan. The model is based on the i minicar and is powered by a large-capacity lithium-ion battery and a compact, high-output electric motor. At the moment, Mitsubishi is conducting fleet tests with several domestic electric power companies. Some power companies in the US are also expected to test the vehicle later this year.

Mitsubishi's compatriot Toyota is also providing vehicles to the event. Toyota will provide 11 Lexus LS600h/LS600hL sedans, 15 Crown Hybrid sedans, 43 Estima Hybrid minivans and five hydrogen-powered FCHV-BUS1 models to transport officials and media representatives. One plug-in HV, two battery-powered i-REAL personal mobility vehicles and a FCHV-adv will be available for test drives.

The Japanese government had requested help to ensure that the summit was as environmentally considerate as possible. One of the major themes of the summit is the environment, particularly measures aimed at combating global warming.
