The new Ford Transit Custom has passed a major milestone, reaching 10,000 sales in the UK in the first 12 months of launch.

More than 5,500 Transit Custom vans have been sold to UK fleets, with Kelly Fleet Services placing the biggest order yet of 232 vans. Transit Custom is also proving a popular choice for artisan businesses in the UK, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of total sales.

Andy Barratt, Ford of Britain sales director, said: “I couldn’t be happier that we’ve reached our target to sell 10,000 Transit Customs a whole month earlier than planned. Ford is in a strong position, offering customers more choice by selling previous generation Transit alongside new Transit Custom, helping to maintain our firm grip on the UK’s medium van segment.

“As Ford continues its product onslaught, it is also investing to meet the precise needs of its business customers by introducing 100 specialist Transit Centres across the UK.”

The new Transit Custom – International Van of the Year 2013 – was designed and engineered at the Ford Dunton Technical Centre, Essex – the global centre of excellence for the company’s commercial vehicles and powertrain development. It is powered by a 2.2-litre Duratorq diesel engine built at the Ford Dagenham Engine plant, Essex.

Transit Custom offers class-leading load-carrying ability, including many innovative loadspace features such as the load-through hatch in the bulkhead for extra-long items. The driver also benefits from the latest Ford technologies like Lane Keeping Alert and Ford SYNC and it remains the only vehicle in its segment to achieve the maximum five-star rating from Euro NCAP.

Ford is undergoing a complete transformation of its commercial vehicle range, introducing four new models – Transit Courier, Transit Connect, Transit Custom and next generation Transit – by 2014.
