The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) had performed a series of crash tests recently especially on models that are produced for the Indonesian market. The tests were conducted to target the Indonesian consumers in conjunction with the ASEAN Automobile Safety Forum 2015/003 jointly organized by ASEAN NCAP with Institut Teknologi Bandung in Bandung, Indonesia on 22–22 September 2015.

The car models that were tested are Datsun GO, Daihatsu Ayla, Toyota Agya and Toyota Hilux. The three former models are of hatchback family whilst Hilux is a pickup truck model. For Daihatsu Ayla, ASEAN NCAP had assessed both its non-airbag variant and the high grade variant.

ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Mr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim said, “Because of its less survival space, it is important to ensure the structure of hatchbacks is strong and able to protect occupants from being crushed in an accident. Also, passive and active safety features e.g. airbag and Electronic Stability Control play major roles in minimizing the severity of injury towards vehicle occupants. ASEAN NCAP will include all these elements upon inspecting the crashed test vehicles.” He also added that NCAP has the responsibility to inform consumers on the safety level of a vehicle. Based on the star rating, they will be able to decide which car that gives them the best protection in the event an accident occurred.

The following are the gist of Datsun GO, Daihatsu Ayla, Toyota Agya and Toyota Hilux results.

– Datsun GO, that made its debut in 2014 is equipped with only 1 airbag and scored 6.82 points for its Adult Occupant Protection (AOP). This makes it eligible for 2-Star Its Child Occupant Protection (COP) also achieved 2-Star with 46% compliance.

– Daihatsu Ayla (Non-Airbag) obtained 1-Star for the assessment on its AOP with 5.56 points. With regards to its COP, Ayla (Non-Airbag) achieved 47%, which is in the 2-Star.

– Daihatsu Ayla’s high grade variant comes with double airbag for its frontal occupants in which it achieved 4-Star rating for AOP with 12.84 points. its COP obtained 3-Star with 51% compliance, slightly higher than Ayla (Non-Airbag) result. The result of Daihatsu Ayla with 2 airbags is a combination between Toyota Agya (AOP result) and Daihatsu Ayla Non Airbag (COP result). Both Daihatsu Ayla and Toyota Agya share similar body structure with technical evidence provided by Daihatsu and Toyota.

– Toyota Agya also received 4-Star for its AOP whereby it has the same AOP score as Daihatsu Ayla (12.84 points). Agya received a relatively good score for its COP compared to other tested hatchback models for the Indonesian market; 82% compliance which falls under the 4-Star.

– Toyota Hilux is the fifth pickup truck model assessed by ASEAN NCAP after Isuzu D-Max (March 2014), Chevrolet Colorado (March 2014) and Mitsubishi Triton (July and August 2015). Mitsubishi Triton underwent two assessments for its standard and higher variant. For AOP, Hilux received 5-Star with 14.53 points whist it obtained 71% compliance for COP, within the category of 4-Star The AOP 5-star relegated to 4-star due to absence of ESC in lower variant.

– The premium variant of Triton AOP score of 15.22 (5-Star) lead the rating of pickup trucks tested by ASEAN NCAP. This is followed by Chevrolet Colorado at 14.19 (5-Star), Toyota Hilux came in third with 14.53 points (5-Star), base/standard variant of Mitsubishi Triton at 13.56 (4-Star) and finally Isuzu D-Max with 11.87 (4-Star). Nevertheless, in COP, Triton obtained the lowest score between the three other models with only 48% compliance (2-Star), Colorado met 63% compliance (3-Star) and both D-Max and Hilux had a higher score of 71% (4-Star).
