At the 16th Shanghai International Automotive Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2015), Bosch is showcasing its latest mobility technologies in the field of electrification, automation, and connectivity of vehicles.

Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services, is showcasing its latest mobility technologies at the 16th Shanghai International Automotive Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2015). Focusing on connectivity, automation, and electrification, the company is presenting a series of integrated mobility solutions to meet Chinese customers’ growing demand for cleaner, safer, more efficient, and more comfortable driving experiences.

China is the largest automobile market worldwide. At the same time, it is faced with multiple challenges including, among other things, environmental pollution, energy shortages, and road accidents. “In combining its expertise in all three mobility domains – connectivity, automation, and electrification – Bosch is dedicated to supporting the sustainable development of the Chinese automotive industry,” said Dr. Rolf Bulander, member of the board of management and chairman of the Mobility Solutions business sector. “In recent years, we have evolved from a supplier of automotive components into a provider of solutions for the complete mobility ecosystem. Our portfolio now extends beyond cars and trucks to many other types of vehicle, and beyond hardware to software and various services,” he added.

Shaping the future of connected driving by combining expertise in both hardware and software
The internet of things (IoT) is bringing a profound technological revolution in the mobility sector. Vehicle connectivity will enable additional information and services, which will make mobility cleaner, safer, more comfortable, and more convenient. By 2025, Bosch expects that almost all newly-registered vehicles will be “connected” and share data with each other in traffic. To drive this trend forward, Bosch is already offering various connected solutions including hardware, software, and services. One of the solutions Bosch offers in this field is the connectivity control unit (CCU), which manages a vehicle’s connections to the outside world. By enabling innovative new connected functions including Bosch’s automatic emergency notification service eCall, fleet management, predictive navigation, and predictive maintenance, it can significantly enhance driving efficiency, safety, and comfort. The company plans to open a new mobility-focused service center in Shanghai, which will be the first to offer eCall in China. If a vehicle equipped with eCall is involved in an accident, the eCall system detects this and sends the information to a 24-hour Bosch service center, which alerts local emergency services.

Automated and electric driving make mobility safer and more eco-friendly
According to the World Health Organization, over 1.2 million people are killed in road accidents each year, and the majority of traffic accidents are caused by human error. To realize its vision of accident-free driving, Bosch is continuously investing in the development and improvement of automated safety and assistance functions. Based on radar, video, and ultrasonic sensors, various automated driving functions have already been realized, such as automatic emergency braking (AEB), automated parking, and traffic jam assist. AEB will become the prerequisite to achieve Europe’s NCAP five-star rating from 2016 onwards.

Moreover, with the full acquisition of its 50 percent joint venture Robert Bosch Automotive Steering GmbH (formerly ZF Lenksysteme GmbH), Bosch now is able to offer all the key technologies for fully-automated driving, which is expected to be realized within next decade. In addition to developing safety technologies for cars and trucks, Bosch also develops anti-lock braking systems for minibuses and motorcycles, which are one of the main reasons for traffic accidents in China.

“To help reduce air pollution and to aid in resource conservation, it is critical to refine solutions for clean and fuel-efficient internal combustion engines, on the one hand, but to continuously invest in e-mobility technologies on the other,” said Dr. Xu Daquan, the executive vice president of Bosch (China) Investment Ltd. “Meanwhile, the additional torque from the electric motor adds to driving enjoyment, bringing combustion engines to new heights.”

Bosch expects roughly 15 percent of all new cars built worldwide to have at least a hybrid powertrain by 2025. Moreover, falling battery prices will make hybrids considerably more affordable. In line with this, Bosch’s portfolio of electric solutions encompasses a broad spectrum from e-bikes and e-scooters, through mild and plug-in hybrids, all the way to fully-electric powertrains. On the other hand, there is still considerable potential in internal-combustion engines. “Even on the basis of 2012 best-in-class powertrains, we see the potential for a further 20-percent savings in fuel economy for conventionally-powered cars,” Bulander said. Improved injection and engine management systems, turbocharging technology, start-stop, and clean diesel technology are some of the solutions to increase the efficiency of cars with internal combustion engines.

“Over the last decade, Chinese automakers have achieved great progress, particularly in innovations and quality management,” said Dr. Xu. “In the future, we will continue to deepen our ‘local for local’ strategy and work with our partners in China closely, supporting them by providing innovative automotive solutions and services.”
