Saving fuel, how far man and machine will go: This has been the central idea behind the long-standing ŠKODA Economy Run. And it will be that time again on 20 September 2014. The 33rd run of the traditional competition will be taking the drivers over 300 km from Kosmonosy to Vrchlabí and back. 50 European teams will be going head to head in ŠKODA cars. A ŠKODA Fabia won in 2013, with an average consumption of only 2.6 l/100 km (109 miles to the gallon).
“The ŠKODA Economy Run is a special kind of race – less is more,” says Roman Havlásek, Director of Aftersales at ŠKODA AUTO. “ŠKODAs are among the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market, at an affordable price. The consumption and emission values achieved during the ŠKODA Economy Run prove this time and again every year.” The winning car in last year’s ŠKODA Economy Run was a ŠKODA Fabia with an average fuel consumption of just 2.6 l/100 km. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of only 60.58 g/km.
The Czech carmaker has long been the official partner of the ŠKODA Economy Run. ŠKODA’s Customer Service Centre takes care of the vehicle preparation and inspections, as well as the entire technical organisation of the event. All services are carried out at the ŠKODA Service Training Centre in Kosmonosy.
A new device developed in partnership with ŠKODA will be used for the first time this year: The electronic measurement tool can more accurately determine how much fuel has been used on the trip by calculating the precise amount of fuel in each tank before and after the competition. Each tank is only filled to 75% capacity. Calculating the difference between the two measurements provides the exact amount of fuel consumed. Until now, the vehicles have each started on a full tank and the amount of fuel consumed has been measured at the finishing line based on the amount of fuel left in the tank.
50 teams from the Czech Republic, Russia and Slovakia will be taking part in this year’s battle to be named fuel-saving champion. Kosmonosy will be the starting and finishing point, with an additional stop at the ŠKODA plant in Kvasiny. Only ŠKODA vehicles running on petrol or diesel can be entered into the competition. There are five evaluation categories, based on the lowest CO2 emissions, calculated by the vehicle’s total consumption. The results will also include the average speed, as well as the difference between the actual consumption and standard fuel consumption in the manufacturer’s guide book. Should two vehicles achieve identical consumption and CO2 emission values, the higher average speed or larger engine capacity shall be the decisive factor.
ŠKODA is working hard to reduce the consumption and CO2 emissions across their entire range. In total, 18 ŠKODA models and model versions produce CO2 emissions of less than 100 g/km, and 97 ŠKODA models emit less than 120g CO2/km. It is the ŠKODA GreenLine and Green tec models that offer the most environmentally friendly mobility. These versions are available for each series in the ŠKODA range. Another important pillar in this environmental campaign is the natural gas engine. ŠKODA offers three attractive G-TEC models – the Citigo G-TEC, Octavia G-TEC und Octavia Combi G-TEC. ŠKODA offers individual mobility, starting at only 79g CO2/km with the natural gas powered city car – the ŠKODA Citigo G-TEC.
The new third generation ŠKODA Fabia will be setting the latest benchmarks in environmentally friendly mobility in autumn 2014. The completely redesigned small car is up to 17% more economical than its predecessor. The Fabia GreenLine, available towards the end of 2015, will run on an average of only 3.1 l diesel/100km, 91 miles to the gallon, emitting just 82 g CO2/km.
