Description

Turkey's geographical location puts it at the centre of trade between Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It is a well-established manufacturing centre, with considerable OEM and supplier presence, both in the passenger car and commercial vehicle sectors. Traditionally, production has depended on export to Europe, as well as Africa and Asia. Indeed, by specialising production, several OEMs have made Turkey a global centre of excellence. Local production is also playing an increasingly important role in domestic sales.

The country has enjoyed investment by a variety of global OEMs keen to take advantage of the country's young, highly educated and growing labour force. Turkey's EU candidacy has been a key factor behind many investment decisions in recent years. However, opposition to Turkey's entry into the EU is mounting, not only within the EU but within Turkey itself. As a result, analysts and commentators are advising investors to prepare for the very real prospect of Turkey remaining permanently outside the EU, albeit with the preferential trade agreements which exist between it and the EU.

This three-part report provides:

  • Socio-political and macro-economic data, as well a historic overview of the country and a summary of the country's vehicle market;
  • Examination of the passenger and commercial vehicle markets in 2010, with insight into the prospects for these markets;
