Sales Forecast: Japan's new vehicle market: prospects to 2015
Date published: Wednesday, October 05, 2011
Description
In 2010 Japan was the world’s third largest market for motor vehicles (cars, trucks and buses) behind China and the USA. In production terms, Japan was the second largest, behind China.
The level of car ownership in Japan, at 458 cars per 1,000 people in 2010 is lower than in the US and most other major advanced economies. The high cost of motoring is a major reason for this and the low levels of car ownership in major cities is also significant.
The Japanese market for cars and commercial vehicles is poised to emerge from a particularly unsettled period. It fell relatively sharply in 2008 and 2009, began to recover (helped by incentives and subsidies) in 2010 then demand plummeted in the wake of the natural disaster in March 2011.
