The forecast for 2013 is for an 8.5% increase to over 1 million units. Thereafter, further growth is expected to take the market beyond its previous peak in 2015 and on to an all-time high in 2017. Mexico’s aging truck parc, with an average vehicle age of 17.4 years, is dominated by 3-axle tractor units which comprise over 60% of the total. Since the 2008/09 downturn, the HCV market has returned to growth, reaching 38,200 units in 2012. Nevertheless, it remains some 26% below its 2007 peak. Further economic growth, parc renewal and improved credit availability are expected to support continuing growth in HCV demand over the next three years, taking the market to a fresh peak in 2015. Full detail and analysis is provided in this three-part report, which also provides: Socio-political and macro-economic data, as well as historic overview of the country and a summary of the country’s vehicle market; Examination of the passenger and commercial vehicle markets in 2012, with insight into the prospects for these markets; Historical data from 2007, with a forecast to 2017. The pace of change in the technology for in-vehicle connectivity, coupled with the speed of innovation in consumer electronics, means it is no longer a question of when connected vehicles will become a mainstream reality, but how soon. What is the single-biggest driver of connected vehicle technology? Who will lead its development – OEMs or suppliers? And will connected vehicle services be delivered through built-in or brought-in devices? Beyond the delivery of the services lies the question of revenue: who will make money from the connected vehicle, how and how much? More immediate concern surrounds the combined issues of safety and security: can connected vehicle technology be satisfactorily brought to market in a way that ensures safety on the roads and security of users’ data? This forward-looking report is based on original research by Automotive World, and includes in-depth interviews with key industry stakeholders; the interview panel for this report includes vehicle manufacturers (Ford, GM, Qoros), suppliers (Cisco, Freescale, Harman, Intel, Vodafone), consultants (P3 North America, Roland Berger Strategy Consultants) and Vodafone. isPermaLink="false">http://www.automotiveworld.com/?p=174631

Whilst the clouds darken over Europe’s automotive industry, the future looks ever brighter for the US light vehicle market. A strong performance in 2012 is expected to be followed by further growth in 2013 and beyond. New light vehicle (LV) registrations rose to 14.3 million units in 2012. A further increase in LV demand is forecast for 2013, reflecting strong replacement demand, amongst other factors; beyond 2013, continued growth is expected to see the market reach a cyclical peak late in the forecast period, representing a run of unprecedented growth (at least in the past 30 years) for the US LV market. The US heavy commercial vehicle (HCV) market (>3,500kg) began its recovery in 2010 with an almost 9% rise from the 26-year low of 222,500 units recorded in 2009. Despite a loss of momentum in 2012, growth has continued, with Class 8 trucks leading the recovery. However, a resurgence of the Class 4-7 sector is expected in the coming years, with a cyclical peak in the combined HCV sector anticipated in 2015. Combined annual LV and HCV sales, according to the forecast, will reach a cyclical peak of almost 17 million units in 2016. It includes light (<3.5t GVW) and heavy (>3.5t GVW) vehicles. The data file contains all OEM groups with global production in excess of 500,000upa and some with lower output but which are nevertheless widely known, e.g. Proton. It also includes the major heavy truck producers. Production data is provided by plant for 2011 and 2012, and can be filtered by region, country, location, OEM group and brand. The database includes assembly plants which assemble kits produced by mother plants. For the most part, such assembly operations are noted, but there may be exceptions, and there are several examples of plants which both assemble kits and undertake full production of some models. In order to arrive at the net production by an OEM, the assembly operations need to be excluded. The plant locations refer to the commonly-used descriptions, but may be described differently in other sources. The following OEMs are covered in the report:

The post http://www.automotiveworld.com/?p=167381

The French light vehicle market is dominated by the three major indigenous brands, Citroen, Peugeot and Renault, though their combined share has fallen from 60%-plus in the early 1990s to under 50% in 2012. Nonetheless, in 2012, Renault (including Dacia) accounted for nine of the Top-30 selling light vehicles, and PSA Peugeot Citroen occupied 14 slots. 2012 was a tough year for the French LV market, ending almost 13% down on 2011. It was a bad year for the French HCV market, which went into reverse in 2012 after showing signs of recovery in 2011. Over the full year, sales fell by almost 8%, including a decline of almost 11% in bus sales. The French government is currently projecting growth of 0.8% in 2013, but independent bodies are forecasting a rate of growth less than half this figure. Given this outlook, the forecast is for a further decline in LV demand in 2013, although recent model renewals and all-new model launches are likely to see the domestics outperform the market. With further decline also forecast for the HCV market, France’s total vehicle market is expected to drop by just over 7% in 2013, but a recovery is anticipated by the end of the forecast period. With two years of sales of the first pure BEVs of the modern era now behind us, the automotive industry is taking a serious look at the technology’s potential and weighing it up against other alternative powertrain technologies. Have BEV sales been disappointing, or have they reached a realistic level for a new technology? Will BEVs have a place in the automotive industry of the future, or will developments in other powertrain technologies make BEVs redundant? Can OEMs, suppliers and other stakeholders turn BEVs into a successful business activity? And what are the biggest opportunities and barriers to a viable BEV market over the next decade? This forward-looking report is based on original research by Automotive World, and includes in-depth interviews with key industry stakeholders; the interview panel for this report includes vehicle manufacturers (Ford, GM and Renault-Nissan Alliance), automotive suppliers (Continental, Delphi, GKN Driveline and Johnson Controls), infrastructure providers (Better Place, Schneider Electric) industry associations (ACEA, OESA and CHAdeMO) and consultancies (Frost & Sullivan, P3 North America). isPermaLink="false">http://www.automotiveworld.com/?p=164493

Germany is a mature market with a relatively high level of car ownership, above the averages for both the EU-27 and EU-15. Most car sales reflect replacement demand and there is little scope for significant growth in trend demand. LV new registrations in Germany fell by 3.1% to 3.3 million units in 2012 following a 9.5% rise in 2011. Aside from the 2010 result, this was the lowest figure in the 13 years from 2000. New registrations of passenger cars alone were 2.9% lower, at 3.08 million units. With the exception of 2010, this was the lowest figure since 1990. In the heavy CV sector (>3.5t), expectations of a pre-buy effect in advance of Euro VI have diminished, as faltering confidence has dominated purchase decisions. We are therefore expecting a further decline in the market in 2013, the impact softened by pre-buy activity. A growing economy is expected to support a recovery in demand from 2014. This three-part report provides: Socio-political and macro-economic data, as well as historic overview of the country and a summary of the country’s vehicle market; Examination of the passenger and commercial vehicle markets in 2012, with insight into the prospects for these markets; Historical data from 2007, with a forecast to 2017.
