‘Critical condition’: Venezuela crisis escalates

General Motors has become the latest victim of Venezuela's escalating troubles as its plant and assets are seized by authorities. By Megan Lampinen

Trouble is escalating in Venezuela. The country's automotive industry has been in a tailspin, with local players struggling against a sluggish economy, currency shortages and political turbulence. Many players have already cut their losses and exited the region. In 2015 Ford finally deconsolidated its Venezuelan operations after years of operational difficulties. General Motors, which has persevered through these headwinds, is now forced to back away as the government seizes its assets.
