US GHG and fuel efficiency truck standards to save fleets US$170bn

Michael Nash examines the pros and cons of the finalised GHG and fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks in the US

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Transportation’s (DOT’s) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have finalised greenhouse gas (GHG) and fuel efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks through to MY2027 with the aim of promoting the uptake of cleaner, more fuel-efficient models. The authorities believe that the standards will cut CO2 emissions by around 1.1 billion metric tons while reducing oil consumption by up to two billion barrels over the lifetime of the vehicles sold under the programme. This could result in saving fleet operators around US$170bn.
