US driving at record levels – what’s it mean for the industry?

Cars, buses and trucks travelled 3.148 trillion miles in the US last year, a new record high. By Megan Lampinen

US roads are experiencing more volumes than ever. Figures from the US Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) put the total number of miles driven last year at 3.148 trillion. This is a lot of miles - equivalent to 337 round trips from Earth to Pluto. Last year's total tops the previous record of 3.003 trillion miles in 2007.
