In the UK, there are currently around 7,500 publicly-accessible EV chargers available, with many more planned. By 2020, the European car parc will include more than 2.9 million plug-in EVs, supported by over 4.1 million EV charging stations, according to research by Navigant. It is expected that the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Italy will account for more than 60% of EV supply equipment, and this will be made up primarily of commercial rather than domestic charge points. The current UK infrastructure will cope with increased use as EVs become more popular, according to both Elektromotive and Chargemaster, two UK-based EV charging infrastructure suppliers, but both agree that more will be needed in the long-run. Paul Muir, Sunderland City Council’s Transportation Strategy Officer, told Automotive World, “I believe that the infrastructure is sufficient to cope with the current demand; however, as the number of electric vehicles on the road increases, provision will also need to be increased in line.”
