Automotive World’s guide to the key new model launches at the 2014 Paris motor show

Here, Automotive World takes a look at the anticipated highlights of the 2014 Paris motor show. This article will be updated throughout the show’s two press days to include key launches and developments.

Some of the most significant new model launches at the 2014 Paris motor show include:

BMW GROUP

This second generation BMW X6 holds aesthetics in mind, priding itself on a “dynamic character” and “eye-catching” design. There is also a 22% reduction in average fuel consumption. The all-wheel drive is permanently active to optimise traction, directional stability and cornering dynamics, as the situation requires. Described by BMW as a cross between the X model and BMW’s Coupes, the X6 has “robustness and versatility” whilst maintaining a “sporting elegance”. Link to press release: BMW X6

BMW 2 Series Convertible

Despite a decrease in weight from the previous model, torsional stiffness has been increased by 20% and bending stiffness is 10% higher to allow for a more rigid body. New and advanced safety features including strengthened A-pillars and improved sensors have enhanced both occupant and pedestrian safety. With an average fuel consumption of 8.5–4.4l/100 km and average CO2 emissions of 199–116g/km, the 2  Series convertible has maximum efficiency for its segment. Mini 5-door

This is Mini’s the first five-door model – although the Mini Countryman has five doors, that vehicle is considerably longer and taller than the Oxford-built Mini. That said, the new 5-door version has increased dimensions compared to the 3-door version – it’s 1611mm longer in total and has a 72mm longer wheelbase. Link to press release: Mini 5-door

The first C 63 AMG celebrated its market launch in 2008. Mercedes will unveil an all-new model at Paris Motor Show 2014 that includes a brand new and highly efficient AMG 4.0-litre V8 Biturbo engine, raising the bar in terms of fuel consumption. The new AMG GT sports coupe has a V8 engine with two turbochargers which are mounted inside the V configuration. As a direct result, Mercedes are able to achieve a compact engine design, optimum weight distribution between the front and rear axle, as well as low exhaust gas emissions. Fiat 500X

Sharing its driveline and underpinnings with the Jeep Renegade, the 500X is one of several key SUVs to be unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. One of the cars’ notable features is the AWD Disconnect system. If AWD is not needed, the system automatically disconnects almost all AWD components from the drivetrain, dramatically reducing CO2 emissions.

The S-Max is the first model to debut Ford Adaptive Steering technology in Europe. As a seven seated vehicle, the S-Max gives a sports alternative to the typically comfort-orientated MVP. With all-wheel drive and various powertrains on offer – including a 1.5-litre EcoBoost gasoline and revised 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engines – Ford is striving for improved emission reductions whilst maintaining an enhanced driving experience. The S-Max uses camera, radar, and ultrasonic devices to implement a pre-collision assist system to help maximise vehicle safety. Link to the press release: Ford S-Max

Paris Motor Show 2014 sees the long-awaited launch of the all-new XC90, and the first Volvo model to use the OEM’s new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA). A further seven-seat SUV that is being showcased at the Paris Motor Show 2014, the new Volvo XC90 offers a range of two-litre and four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains, all of which compete with the best in fuel efficiency margins, with CO2 emissions of around 60g/km. This is considerably lower than the Land Rover’s Discovery Sport. GENERAL MOTORS

With updated engines, transmissions, engine technology, chassis and interiors, the fourth-generation Corsa is almost entirely new. In the interior, the ‘IntelliLink’ system has its first use in a high-volume application. HONDA

A new turbocharged 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine producing more than 280 PS “sets standards on power, torque and engine response” according to Honda. The Civic Type R will mark the debut of Honda’s new ‘+R’ button that, once activated, heightens the engines activity with torque-mapping changed to a more aggressive and performance-focused setting, as well as improving the steering and handling of the vehicle. Honda CR-V

The CR-V has already been launched, but at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, Honda will display its European CR-V, built at the OEM’s factory in Swindon, UK. According to figures released by Honda, the CR-V was the world’s best selling SUV in the first quarter of 2014. The new model that will be unveiled this weekend has an almost entirely new exterior, as well as an updated interior. Link to the press release: Honda CR-V

Honda Jazz

This third-generation Jazz will be part of Honda’s small series range. The external dimensions have been revised since the earlier model, with an increase of 15mm in length. Along with a centre fuel tank layout and ‘Honda Magic Seats’, the extra length allows for a spacious interior. The new 1.3 litre i-VTEC petrol engine is supported by either a six-speed manual (replacing the previous five-speed unit) or a CVT transmission.

 

HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY

Hyundai is focusing on three key areas with the all-new i20, recently unveiled to media: interior space, high-technology and comfort-enhancing features, including front and rear parking sensors, and design. The latest-generation model is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor. A stronger chassis and bodyshell, along with new features, like the lane departure warning system, show Hyundai’s focus not only on fuel economy and emissions reduction, but also the OEM’s increasing safety consciousness. Link to the press release: Hyundai i20

MAZDA MOTOR CORPORATION

The all-new Mazda MX-5 is 100kg lighter than its predecessor, and is the first rear-wheel drive version of the ‘SKYACTIV’-Chassis. According to Mazda, it has the “lowest-ever centre of gravity” which, along with the weight reduction, makes it an interesting addition to the market for affordable lightweight sports cars. Link to the press release: Mazda MX-5

 

NISSAN MOTOR COMPANY

Comfort and noise reduction within the interior have been the focus of this latest Infiniti model. The Q70 incorporates the Around View Monitor that is designed to make blind intersections and parking manoeuvres easier to navigate is now available on all world markets. Nissan Pulsar

The all-new Pulsar is Nissan’s latest C-segment offering, marking the brand’s first product in the segment since the Almera. There are two new engines – 1.2-litre DIG-T gasoline unit and a 1.5-litre dCi. The Pulsar is the first model to use the new ‘Nissanconnect’ system which incorporates a touch screen, allows app synchronisation and enables easy-to-use social networking. Link to the press release: Nissan Pulsar

The latest Peugeot 308 GT retains elements of the older model, including i-Cockpit cabin and versatile interior. A new 1.6-litre engine has a high fuel economy and low emissions, whilst the ride height has been lowered and various new chassis settings are included. Like various other cars that are being unveiled at IAA 2014, the 308 GT utilises radar in order to incorporate new safety features like the Emergency Collision Braking System. Link to the press release: Peugeot 308 GT

 

RENAULT GROUP

As with previous generations of the Espace, comfort is the focus of Renault’s new cross-over. Both the five- and seven-seat versions feature new interior modularity. Although the Espace was the first MVP, competition comes in the form of Ford’s sportier MVP, the S-Max, the latest generation of which is also on show at the Paris Motor Show 2014. Link to the press release: Renault Espace

Smart Fortwo

Thanks to Daimler’s close partnership with the Renault-Nissan Alliance, the Smart ForTwo and ForFour share a platform with the Renault Twingo. The ForTwo, however, continues to be built at the Smart factory in Hambach, France. Smart is utilising the JBL sound system for the first time, which produces an impressively full sound. There are also improvements in the multimedia platforms within the vehicles, with a new touchscreen system allowing for smartphone navigation. It’s effectively the rebirth of Smart, but Dieter Zetsche ruled out any chance of smart becoming a full line range akin to Mini. Link to the press release: Smart Fortwo

The ForFour is the first four-door Smart since the end of the brand’s partnership with Mitsubishi in 2005. Built in partnership with Renault, the ForFour makes use of high- strength hot-formed steels and maximum strength multiphase steel, improving rigidity and safety. Advanced assistance systems are offered, including Crosswind Assist, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Keeping Assist. Although there may be new variants and features in the Fortwo and the Forfour, the cars remain a mere 2.69 metres in length – a size unrivalled by any other small vehicle at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Link to the press release: Smart Forfour

 

SUZUKI

This small SUV acts as a replacement for the S-cross, with 1.6-litre petrol and diesel powertrains. Like the Mini 5-door, the Vitara is another small car on show at the 2014 Paris Motor Show that is now increasing in size and upgrading to five doors. TATA MOTORS

Jaguar XE

The XE brings Jaguar to a new market segment

The new Jaguar XE is the only car in the class to use an “aluminium-intensive monocoque”, with lightweight aluminium accounting for 75% of the structure. This new alloy allows for a substantial weight reduction and features a high level of recycled material that is helping Jaguar edge towards its goal of using 75% recycled material by 2020. The XE is the most fuel efficient Jaguar yet, with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions less than 100g/km. Link to the press release: Jaguar XE

Land Rover Discovery Sport

Land Rover will be showcasing the new Discovery Sport at 2014 Paris Motor Show. Pitched as the “world’s most versatile and capable premium compact SUV”, this seven-seater has a footprint no larger than existing five seat SUVs. VOLKSWAGEN GROUP

Both the all-new TT Roadster and TTS Roadster will make their debuts at the Paris Motor Show 2014. The cars include fast-retracting fabric hoods in accordance with roadster tradition and in the interest of weight minimisation. Coupled with advanced hybrid aluminium and steel construction as well as a new chassis, both cars are lighter than their predecessors. A re-engineered powertrain featuring a 6¾-litre twin-turbo V8 propels the Mulsanne Speed to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds. Skoda Fabia

This is the third generation Fabia and Skoda’s most fuel efficient and economic, using up to 17% less fuel than the previous model. Innovative safety, comfort and infotainment systems rival that of higher vehicle segments. Volkswagen Passat GTE

The new Volkswagen Passat GTE is able to travel up to 31 miles with electric power alone, reaching speeds of 80mph. This is due to the combination of a 1.4l turbo petrol engine and a 114bhp electric motor. As a result, CO2 emissions for the vehicle are less than 45g/km, arguably making the Passat GTE a contender in the most efficient car to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show 2014. Link to the press release: Volkswagen Passat GTE

With characteristics typical of an SUV, the Golf Alltrack strives to be a versatile off road vehicle whilst incorporating all the safety benefits of a road car.
